The Art of Being Too Much (and why that's perfect)

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from constantly dialing yourself down. Dimming your enthusiasm. Softening your edges. Measuring your words like ingredients in a recipe nobody asked you to make.

But what if “too much” isn’t a character flaw? What if it’s actually a superpower that the world has convinced us to be ashamed of?

I’m thinking about this because I watched someone light up yesterday while talking about their weird passion project, something involving 15th-century bread recipes and modern sourdough techniques. Their whole face changed. Their hands moved. They forgot to be cool, forgot to be measured, forgot to check if I was still listening.

I was mesmerized.

There’s something magnetic about people who overflow their containers. Who can’t help but spillover into enthusiasm, into curiosity, into caring deeply about things that don’t matter to anyone else. They’re dangerous in the best possible way, they make you remember what it feels like to be fully alive.

The world needs people who are too much. We need the ones who feel everything deeply, who notice patterns others miss, who get unreasonably excited about details that make everyone else’s eyes glaze over. We need the ones who start seventeen projects and finish three because those three were exactly what the world needed.

Being “too much” isn’t about being inconsiderate or overwhelming. It’s about refusing to shrink yourself to make others comfortable. It’s about trusting that your particular brand of intensity has value, even when (especially when) it doesn’t fit the standard molds.

Your too-muchness isn’t something to manage. It’s something to honor.

The world is full of people who’ve learned to be just enough, precisely enough, never too much. But where’s the magic in that? Where’s the surprise? Where’s the beautiful, chaotic creativity that comes from someone who can’t help but care too deeply about everything they touch?

Stay too much. The world needs what you’ve got, at full volume.
